CONGRATULATIONS SAINT GEORGE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND STAFF for being named a TITLE 1 DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL FOR 2011

ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS FOR CHARLTON COUNTY SCHOOLS

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a measurement of school achievement and is a component of the federal “No Child Left Behind Act.”  Schools are rated based on performance of three standards: test participation, academic achievement, and a second indicator.  The second indicator for high schools is the graduation rate and for the elementary and middle schools it is the attendance rate.  At the high school level the required graduation rate is 85 percent and the absence rate for elementary and middle schools must not exceed 15 percent.

The preliminary report for the 2010-11 school year indicates that Folkston Elementary School, St. George Elementary School and Bethune Middle School met adequate yearly progress goals.  Charlton County High School did not meet the requirements this year.  In the Okefenokee Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) area, only Ware County and Clinch County had its entire schools meet AYP.  Statewide, only 31 school systems had their entire schools meet AYP.  The percentage of schools making AYP statewide in 2011 is 63.2% compared to 71% in 2010.

Locally, all Charlton schools improved academically in math.  CCHS had improvement of achievement scores on the Georgia High School Graduation Test of 15.1%.  Folkston Elementary School improved in math 2.7% while St. George Elementary School realized an improvement of 5.7% on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT).  Bethune Middle School improved their math CRCT scores by 7.2%.  All of the schools met the required Annual Measureable Objective in English/Language Arts with the exception of CCHS.  In addition, CCHS failed to meet the required graduation rate of 85% as did the state with a graduation rate of 79.2%. Statewide only 29.97% of high schools met AYP goals.

St. George Elementary School continues to be designated as a Title 1 Distinguished School.  Folkston Elementary School (formerly Bethune Elementary School) has maintained meeting AYP standards for thirteen years and SGES for eight years.  A school must meet AYP for two consecutive years before being designated as a distinguished school.

Final AYP determinations will be made public in September.  Due to the reorganization of the grade configurations for Bethune Middle School, Folkston Elementary and Charlton County High School, new needs improvement designations may have an impact on Charlton schools.  Final determinations will be announced when the complete AYP designations are released.  Currently Bethune Middle School and Folkston Elementary School have school choice options while CCHS will be providing supplemental services for at-risk students.

School choice and supplemental education services may be available for students and information can be obtained by contacting the principal of each school.  More information concerning AYP can be found on the Georgia Department of Education website at www.doe.k12.ga.us

Mission Statement
The Mission of St. George Elementary School is to provide exemplary teaching to all learners, improve curriculum mastery, and ensure a climate of success, trust, and safety among all stakeholders in order to leave no child behind.

Belief Statement
All learners have needs, wants, desires, and expectations - social, emotional, physical and intellectual.

All children can learn.

All children should be shown that they have worth.

Listening to children validates their worth.

Teacher enthusiasm and a supportive family are essential in learning for
students' self esteem and motivation.

While learning occurs at all levels, effective learning occurs when the learner
accepts responsibility for learning, is motivated from within, and when
subject matter is relevant.

All children need flexibility in levels of instruction.

The learning environment must be comfortable, non-threatening,
aesthetically appealing, appropriately structured, and free of
sarcasm both for teacher and student.

Technology is necessary in the educational process.

Learning is a continuous, life-long process.

Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Mrs. Dolly Tibbs for being chosen as the St. George Elementary School  AND Charlton County's Teacher of the Year! Dolly is serving her 19th year in the field of teaching and is a wonderful educator who exhibits the principles of exemplary teaching practices.  She shows great compassion for the students under her charge.  Her patience and kindness toward the children is heartfelt and sincere.  "I see the great need to have the best teachers, like Dolly, prepare these students for the world outside of the classroom walls," states principal, Joan Crews.  She provides opportunities for her students that they need and would otherwise not receive if she were less of a teacher.  Dolly works hard with struggling students and challenges gifted children.  Her relationship with parents is excellent.  She will always be an advocate for her students both in the school setting and beyond.

Dolly Tibbs is a person of excellent moral character and displays professional ethics befitting a person selected as Teacher of the Year.  Our small rural school is fortunate to have her.  She goes above and beyond serving children and families and is active with all parent involvement programs at our school.
